Lead Economics

What Does a B2B Lead Actually Cost — and How Do You Lower It?

Between ads, content, and sales time, most B2B leads cost far more than the click that produced them. Where interactive tools change the math.

Ask most B2B teams what a lead costs and they'll quote the ad metric: cost per click, maybe cost per form fill. On LinkedIn — where most B2B buying audiences actually are — clicks commonly run several dollars and form fills well into the tens or hundreds, depending on the audience. But that's not what a lead costs.

The real math is bigger than the click

A lead's true cost includes everything it took to produce and work it:

  • Media spend — the ads that generated the click.
  • Content production — the ebook, webinar, or report behind the gate.
  • Sales time — the calls and emails spent on leads that were never qualified.
  • Opportunity cost — the good-fit prospects who bounced because the form asked too much and gave nothing back.

When you add it up, the difference between a cheap lead and an expensive one usually isn't the channel — it's what happens on the page the click lands on.

Conversion rate is the biggest lever

If a landing page converts 2% of clicks and an interactive tool converts several times that, the same ad budget produces multiples of the leads. Nothing else about the campaign changed — same audience, same spend, same creative. The destination did the work. This is why we treat the landing experience as part of the media plan, not an afterthought to it.

Qualification is the hidden lever

A hundred unqualified form fills are more expensive than thirty qualified ones — because someone on your team has to find that out the slow way. Tools like assessments and calculators qualify at the moment of capture: the prospect's answers and score travel with the lead, so sales effort goes to the prospects most likely to buy.

What this means for your budget

Before adding spend, run the math on the traffic you already have. Our lead generation calculator page walks through exactly that — what your current visitor flow is worth today versus what it could produce with an interactive tool on the receiving end. Often the cheapest leads available are the ones your existing pages are already missing.

Lowering cost per lead isn't about finding cheaper clicks. It's about giving the clicks you already pay for something worth converting on.
